Blue Poop Challenge - should you do it?

Video Transcript:

Even the homemade recipe online, unfortunately, is mostly not great ingredients that can and is a part of why 61% of Americans are struggling with gut health issues. Hi everybody, and welcome back. Today, we're talking about this hot trend called the blue poop challenge. It went viral on TikTok, it's hitting Instagram.

A couple of you have messaged me about it. And so I wanted to film a quick video. It's not my normal filming day, so just snuck this one in.

So the blue poop challenge is created by a company called Zoe, and it's meant to help you figure out your transit time. And this blue muffin challenge is helping to see how long it takes food to go from the start of your gastrointestinal tract when you eat the food to the end.

And why is this important?

Well, we find that for individuals who have a normal transit time, can be tied to them having a healthier colon or indicative of a healthier colon. And how we know that is because researchers went and tested colon transit time in some rural African and Asian societies. And found that they virtually have no chronic disease, no inflammatory bowel disease, or colon cancer, and their colon transit times came back to be between 12 and 24 hours.

So it's one piece of this big puzzle of us trying to use these clues to see how healthy somebody's gut is, so colon transit time is one tool to use also the form of stool. Have your stool look like a snake, no diarrhea, no constipation, one to three bowel movements, and a light-dark brown color. All of that is also a part of the puzzle. And so this colon transit time and using these blue muffins is one way to do it.

And do I recommend it?

Yes and no. So yes. I definitely recommend checking colon transit time, but no, because it's a bit ironic that these muffins are meant to test gut health and yet they include ingredients that can be harmful to gut health. They have a lot of sugar in them. They're using refined wheat, which we know is heavily sprayed with glyphosate, which Dr. Seneff at MIT is doing a lot of research showing how that can increase intestinal permeability, there are food dyes in it, which we know can make the people in kiddos ADD and ADHD worse.

And let me just pull up the ingredients and we'll read through them. And I think you'll better understand. And if the company is watching, please reach out. Like I'd love to formulate a better muffin for you because I think what you're doing with helping people better understand their colon transit time is really, really cool. But the ingredients are all-purpose flour, and granulated sugar number two.

And when you read ingredients, the first one is what is the most of that in the product. The second one, you know, second most and so on. So like the number two ingredient is sugar.

Number one is refined wheat. Not off to a really good start. And then they have water canola oil, which canola comes from the rapeseed, and chemicals are used to pull the oil out of that. Gluten-free baking powder, and vanilla extract, which has natural flavor sugars in it.

And then this royal blue food dye, which has fake colorings and some other sources of blue food, dye include sugar as well, even the homemade recipe online, unfortunately, is mostly not great ingredients that can, and is a part of why 61% of Americans are struggling with gut health issues.

I have a way that you can check your transit time where you don't have to put these ingredients in your body. I see some people online, developing different muffins based upon the idea that this company is putting out there. And so that would be a great idea to check some of these other recipes but certainly, if you have a food sensitivity or you have celiac disease, you're not going to be able to, or you should avoid doing these muffins.

And so what can you do instead?

Well, you can actually just use organic corn and beets. So the beets are going to come out in your stool, it's going to look red. So you're going to know when it starts and then when it stops and then the organic corn, corn has cellulose on its outside and the human body doesn't have the enzymes to properly break that down.

So it's kind of come out pretty much all in your stool. I would recommend doing organic corn just because we know corn that's Roundup ready is heavily sprayed with Roundup, which is large part glyphosate which again, that's that research showing that it can damage the gut. And so organic corn or beets, we're coming into summer, so you should have some access to beets soon.

So how do you do this?

First, you would eat just half a cup to three-quarters of a cup of organic corn or beets. And then wait until you start seeing it in your stool. When you start seeing it, write down the date and time.

And then when you stop seeing it, write down the date and time, figure out how much time is in between those two numbers and the normal is 12 to 24 hours. And so if you're in that range, that's great. So you have a normal stool transit time.

Now, if yours is less than that, so it's coming through too fast. That means you could be at risk for malabsorption and some other issues. And then if it's too slow, you could be reabsorbing different toxins and you probably just don't feel great because you're leaning more towards that constipation side of things. And so if you are not in this normal window, we do have a FREE GUIDE: 5 Ways to Improve your gut health. And you might find some helpful information in that.
