Hi, I'm Katie Bailey. I'm a gut health dietitian at Oswald Digestive Clinic, where we help individuals improve and resolve their bothersome gut issues.

All right, let's get started On today's topic.

What are key characteristics of constipation and what can cause it?

So, constipation is a common digestive issue that is characterized by infrequent bowel movements, difficulty passing stool, and the feeling of incomplete evacuation.

It can be caused by various different factors, including inadequate fiber intake, dehydration, lack of physical activity, certain medications or supplements, digestive issues like gut dysbiosis or poorer gut motility, as well as chronic stress while occasional constipation is not a major cause for concern.

Chronic constipation, on the other hand, can lead to a lot of discomfort and bloating as well as potentially more serious health issues.

What is SOMA breathing and what are the benefits?

So SOMA breathing is also known as abdominal breathing or belly breathing, and it's a technique that's been practiced for centuries in various different cultures. It involves conscious and controlled breathing through the abdomen, using the diaphragm app to facilitate deep, full breaths in addition to potentially relieving constipation.

SOMA breathing has many other benefits, including reducing stress and anxiety, improving respiratory function, enhancing focus and concentration, better sleep quality, as well as increased energy levels through improved oxygenation and circulation.

And you relieve constipation with SOMA breathing, and if so, how does it work?

Can SOMA Breathing Improve Constipation?

So the answer to this is it definitely is possible, especially if the root cause of your constipation has to do with stress or being tense or anxious.

The connection between SOMA breathing and natural constipation relief lies in the way that this breathing technique impacts the digestive system.

So deep abdominal breathing is going to encourage the relaxation of the muscles in the abdomen and the pelvic floor, which is going to reduce tension and facilitate smoother bowel movements.

Additionally, SOMA breathing promotes increased oxygen flow and improved circulation, which are both essential for optimal digestive function. Chronic stress can contribute to constipation by disrupting the body's natural rhythms and digestive processes.

SOMA breathing has a calming effect, which is going to help to reduce stress and promote overall relaxation, which may alleviate constipation.

How can you incorporate SOMA breathing into your routine?

The first thing that you're going to want to do is you're going to want to choose a comfortable and quiet environment that's going to allow you to practice without distractions.

Then you want to assume a comfortable position, either sitting straight up or laying down in a position that's going to allow your abdomen to expand freely during inhalation.

Next, really focus on your breathing.

You're going to want to inhale slowly and deeply through your nose, allowing your abdomen to expand outward.

Then you're going to exhale slowly through your mouth feeling your abdomen gently contract.

It's going to look something like this, and you'll want to do that for several breaths. Some people like to put one hand on their chest and another on their abdomen while they're doing this breathing technique.

You can also incorporate gentle abdominal massage to enhance the benefits of SOMA breathing for constipation relief.

Now, it's important to remember to combine SOMA breathing with other diet and lifestyle modifications, such as increasing your fiber intake, making sure you're staying hydrated and maintaining regular physical activity.

SOMA Breathing: Wrap-Up

To wrap up our topic for today, SOMA Breathing could potentially offer a natural and effective solution for constipation relief by promoting muscle relaxation, increased oxygen flow, stress reduction, and improved circulation.

SOMA breathing can possibly alleviate some of the discomfort that comes with constipation.

But remember, we are all unique and we're all going to have different root causes of our constipation.

Now, it is important to determine what your root cause is, but if you haven't had success with anything else you've tried, I encourage you to try SOMA breathing and see how it makes you feel.
